RELIGIOUS PROBLEMS IN VIETNAM, Nguyen Minh Quang

From the angle of religious faith, statistcs show that there are six major religions legally operating in Vietnam. Among them, two are indigenous (Cao Dai and Hoa Hao) and the rest imported (Buddhism,Cristianity, Evangelism and islam).

The six religions have today 20 million followers (a fourth of Vietnam's population), about 50,000 religious dignitaries and profesional religious practitioners, and more than 20,000 places of worship including churches, temples, mosgues and other sanctuaries.

Buddhism and Crhistianity are the largest religions present in almost of the country from delta plains to mountainous and coastal areas, from urban centers to rural ones inhabited by the majority of the population On the cotrary, Evagelism found mainly in major cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang And particulary in Southern Vietnam provinces. Today, it is also foun rather popular in the Central Highlands (Tay Nguyen). Islam is widespread mainly in the southern part of Central Vietnam an some provinces of South Vietnam. Cao Dai and Hoa Hao base themselves in Sout Vietnam and most notably, in Tay Ninh province.

The religions in Vietnam pursue differnt faiths.
Irrespective of their short or long history of development in this country, they are always united within the national community, sharing the common cause of national building and defence of the 54 ethnic groups of Vietnam.
